New Years is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. The date for Chinese New Year, as with other traditional Chinese holidays, is according to the Chinese agricultral (lunar) calendar. Generally the Chinese New Year begins on the day the new moon occurring closest to the fifth of February on the solar calendar. Each year on the Chinese agricultural calendar is associated with one of the twelve animals in the Chinese zodiac. If you want to determine what your sign in the Chinese zodiac is, download and run New Year(56.5KB).
Ten days before the New Year house cleaning starts. If needed, painting and refurbishing is done during this time. People also start buying food supplies and gifts they will need for the New Year.
Seven days prior to New Year's day families make offerings to send off the kitchen god on his annual visit to heaven. The kitchen god reports on the family he is assigned to while he is in heaven. The offerings made to him include sweets and sticky rice candy that make it difficult for him to make and intelligible report ( in case his report is negative).
Before the arrival of the New Year , men and boys get haircuts. Outstanding debts are payed in full and all loose ends remaining in the old year are tied uo. Many people buy new clothes to be worn in the New Year.
On New Year's Eve all the members of the family reunite and enjoy a wonderful dinner of many special dishes. As midnight approaches many families do worship to Heaven and Earth (TianDi), the household god, and ancestors. As the New Year arrives it is greeted with a roar of firecrackers and fireworks.
On New Year's day the children kneel before their elders and and wish them prosperity. In return the elders present the children with Red Envelopes (HongBao) which contain money. People greet each other with the phrase GongXiFaCai (congratulations and prosper). The celebrations last for two weeks and culminate with the Lantern Festival at the time of the full moon.

During China's Warring States Period (460 - 221B.C.) seven countries
divided the land. The state of Qin in the North West gradually increased
its power and proceeded to conquer the other countries. In 221 B.C. Qin
finished conquering all the other countries and the King of Qin proclaimed
himself Shi Huang Di (始皇帝) , or "The First Emperor". Qin Shi Huang taxed the farmers heavily in order to maintain an army that exceeded two million troops. He sent 300,000 troops to push the Huns north of the Yellow River and conscripted another 300,000 men to connect the defensive walls built by the states of Qin, Zhao, and Yan into one "Great Wall". Qin Shi Huang died in 210B.C. and was interred in a massive tomb that includes numerous weapons and a large army of terracotta soldiers and horses for him to command in death. A section of his tomb appears in the photo below. |
